General information about Canada
Canada is in the north of the American continent and is a constitutional monarchy. Canada is the largest country in the world after Russia. In the country live many different ethnic groups, especially the British, Canadians, Americans, French, Irish, Germans and Italians. The capital is Ottawa, however, Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver have a higher number of people respect it. Among the places to visit there are: the Niagara Falls and the Montmorency Falls, the Jasper National Park, the historic city of Quebec and Saint Joseph's Oratory in Montreal. Did you know that Canadians like Italian food? They consume macaroni and cheese more than any other nation in the world.
Did you know that...
With an area of 9,984,670 square kilometers, Canada is the second largest country in the world after Russia. On the Canadian territory there are countless beautiful lakes. The total number of them makes of Canada the country with the highest number of lakes in the world. In the north-west of the state, the license plates of cars often have the form of a polar bear. The same people usually leave their vehicles open in order to give the opportunity to others to take refuge from the polar bears.
What cannot enter in Canada, not even in a package
Similarly to the United States, even in Canada, laws and strange provisions are applied to certain sectors. Even at the customs level, Canada is full of surprises. Alongside prohibited items in all countries around the world, the huge North American state is known for several special cases, which are to be considered when it comes to importing goods. In addition, some provisions for the entry of goods from the United States are in force in Canada. This also applies to the travelers themselves: for Canadian and American citizens there are entry conditions in the United States respectively in Canada facilitating bureaucratic obstacles. In these cases, certain procedures are in place for entry into the country, for example through the NEXUS program: members have a NEXUS card, which replaces the passport and is electronically legible. A very sensible system, as Canada's only border is to the United States. Otherwise, Canada is confined only by the Oceans.
In Canada, the agency responsible for overseeing the import and export of illegal goods, respectively, to monitor all incoming goods, is the Canadian Border Services Agency (abbreviated CBSA). The body also manages border checks and arrests and expulsions of persons, for example in the case of organized crime or terrorism. This means that all people and goods are subject to customs controls by CBSA officials.
Canada has a wide range of products, which cannot or can only cross the border in a limited form. The examples are:
- Animals or products of animal origin
- Ammunition, explosive materials and artificial bodies
- Vehicles (including not only cars but also snowmobiles or the like)
- Objects, which serve to spread propaganda of hatred, sedition or betrayal (in writing, visual or audio)
Beside these typical goods, in Canada we also find some consumer goods on the list of prohibited goods. In the plurality of cases in Canada, different or more stringent provisions apply to the use or composition of certain goods. Among these particular products we find the following:
- Baby Shirts
- Abro - abrus precatorius (a shrub, sometimes used as a jewelry component, but being poisonous)
- Products which have been totally or partially created by the prison labor (such as souvenirs, recordings, wood or leather goods)
- Mattresses used or components thereof (these products may only be imported if they have been cleaned and disinfected and accompanied by a document approving the cleaning procedure)
Since the United States and Canada have a large exchange of goods, special provisions are also in place for the export and import of materials. For this reason, for example, fat or animal slices can be imported only limited, just like pastries or cakes (which do not contain meat), in addition to certain plants. There can also cross the border crowns and Christmas trees with small exceptions, partly also perishables such as cheese, milk, yogurt or butter. In this item we also find - with limitations - fish, respectively, fish products, in addition to cut flowers, fruits and vegetables or spices, tea, finished products or wood products.
Along with these products, which are only valid for entry from the US to Canada, there are several other products that are subject to special arrangements. Since the import list is updated continuously, it is advisable to check in detail the applicable provisions before organizing a shipment. You can contact the official authorities on www.inspection.gc.ca or www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca
