The largest social class in Sri Lanka is the Sinhalese, while the largest minority is composed by the Tamils. Both groups have been populating the island state for about 2000 years. Especially during colonialism the conflict between the two groups intensified. The Tamils at that time were mainly employed as administrative workers, as the majority was able to read and write. Since the independence of British supremacy, this iniquity has been settled: the Tamil - the typical characteristics of the language as well as the influence of the British colonial heritage have been removed from public life and the Sinhalese has been introduced as an official language. Below, in the Tamil areas, located in the north of the island, various armed protests and militant movements arose, which ideologically aim at a split from the Sinhalese. Subsequently, since 1983, a civil war has started in Sri Lanka.
In today's administration both Sinhala and Tamil are recognized as national languages. English was an official language until 1957 and still covers the status of official language in the field of traffic and education. Both national languages of Sri Lanka have their own writing, which in everyday life is composed of Latin letters, such as for the naming of localities and people. Even in the postal sector this appears to be common practice, even if for certain terms there are different ways of writing.
If you wish to organize an expedition to Sri Lanka, you can simply use the following method of writing. The address structure for Sri Lanka has been established according to international provisions and is not very different from the models in use. The structure of an address in Sri Lanka is therefore composed of at least four lines:
- Name of the recipient
- House number + name of the street
- (Quarter / district)
- City + Postcode
- SRI LANKA
- If the district of a city or the district of the country is known, they may be placed in a row between the street number and the street name, and the town and the postal code.
- It is often recommended to use house names instead of house numbers: this alternative is to be chosen only if the house does not actually have a house number. The rule says: if there is a house number, then it should be used this one and not the name of the house.
- The name of the location must be written correctly. It is recommended to search online or through official sources through the postal code the correct writing of the location.
- In the case of a post office box in the capital Colombo, it is not necessary to also include the postal code of the capital. In this case, the box number is sufficient.
