The Postal Code System in Denmark
The Danish postal service was established with the postal ordinance of King Christian IV in 1624. Prior to that, court letters were transported by royal messengers.
In 1991, the company Post Danmark was founded, owned by the Danish Ministry of Transport. About ten years later, Post Danmark was privatized and transformed into a joint-stock company. In 2009, Post Danmark and the Swedish postal service Posten AB merged into a joint-stock company. Initially, they were called Post Norden and since 2011, PostNord. Currently, the Swedish state holds 60% of the shares and Denmark holds 40%.
Danish Postal Codes
Danish postal codes are four digits and consist only of numbers. This postal coordinate system was introduced on September 20, 1967, and also includes postal codes for Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
Since the country is relatively small and there are fewer than 1000 post offices, a system was developed that is suitable for both incoming and outgoing mail.
The first two digits of Danish postal codes indicate the city, and the last two digits specify the district, borough, or village. A few large recipients have their own postal codes.
Below is a list of the geographical correspondence of the first digits:
- 1xxx – Copenhagen, Frederiksberg
- 2xxx – Frederiksberg, Copenhagen (mainland)
- 30xx to 36xx – Northern Zealand
- 37xx – Bornholm
- 38xx – originally Faroe Islands, no longer used – not part of the EU zone
- 39xx – Greenland – not part of the EU zone
- 4xxx – the rest of Zealand and surrounding islands
- 5xxx – Funen and surrounding islands
- 6xxx – Southwestern Jutland (including Northern Schleswig)
- 7xxx – Central and Northwestern Jutland
- 8xxx – Eastern Jutland
- 9xxx – Northern Jutland
