Postal Codes in Italy

In Italy, the postal code was introduced for the first time on 1st July, 1967, called "Codice di avviamento postale" or abbreviated CAP. The State Postcode was formed from the beginning of five digits. With the introduction of the new system, the territory was divided into 12.500 individual postal centers, each postal center having its own CAP.

The system in Italy

The first two digits of the Italian postal code indicates the province. In 1967 there were only 90 provinces, while now there are 110. The Postal Code refers to the old province.
The third character of the postal code represents the provincial capital itself. San Marino and Vatican States have Italian postcodes. San Marino postcode can be between 47 890 and 47 899 and the Vatican's is 00120.

Correct Pronunciation

The first part of Italy CAP (consists of 2 digits) corresponds to the province's chief town, and the last three digits represents the remaining towns and villages.
