Ship a Pallet to Ireland

Italian exports to Ireland have passed five billion euro, and almost half of that is pharmaceuticals: medicines and active ingredients for the plants in Cork, Dublin and Limerick, where fourteen of the world's fifteen largest pharma groups manufacture, and for the medtech cluster in Galway. More than 200 Italian companies work around this industry, from Riello UPS, which keeps Dublin's data centres powered, to food importers such as Little Italy, in Dublin since 1976, supplying restaurants and delis across the island. There is a sea between Italy and Ireland, but the goods travel by road and ferry, one pallet at a time: components, packaging, wine, equipment. The Europacco pallet service covers this route: collection from any address in Italy, delivery from Dublin to Galway, crossing included. Each pallet can weigh up to 600 kg, whether a company or a private individual is sending it.

From €187,55 for a standard Euro pallet (80×120 cm).

How much it costs to ship a pallet to Dublin, ferry included

The price for Ireland covers the whole journey: road through France, ferry, delivery. The order form shows it once you enter weight, dimensions and addresses, with nothing added on afterwards. For a standard Euro pallet (80×120 cm) it starts at €187,55, collection in Italy and delivery in Ireland included. Dublin, Cork or a laboratory in Galway cost the same: weight and size count, not where on the island the pallet is going.

Maximum dimensions: 150 × 150 × 200 cm (sum of the three sides max. 400 cm)

Maximum weight: 600 kg

Across France to Cherbourg, then the direct ferry

The pallet crosses France by road, around 1,200 kilometres from Milan to Normandy, and at Cherbourg boards one of the direct freight ferries to Ireland: to Rosslare, in the south east of the island, with daily sailings, or straight into Dublin Port, a crossing of 17-19 hours. Since Brexit the direct routes between the continent and Ireland have multiplied and today carry a third of all the island's trailer traffic. The pallet stays inside the European Union the whole way and does not pass through Great Britain.

Once landed in Ireland, the pallet enters a logistics network concentrated around Dublin. The capital's port handles almost half the country's goods, and the distribution warehouses lie to the south west along the N7, at Baldonnel, Greenogue and Grange Castle, and to the north towards the airport, at Swords. From here the lines run to Cork and its port at Ringaskiddy, to Limerick, Galway and Waterford. From collection in Italy to delivery in Ireland usually takes 8-10 working days.

Because the pallet never touches Great Britain, there are no customs formalities. The only thing attached to it is the printed DDT.

What travels by pallet from Italy to Ireland

Ireland is a small country with some of the most concentrated industries in Europe, and pallets from Italy follow that geography. The most common cases:

Supplies for pharma in Cork and medtech in Galway

At Ringaskiddy, in Cork Harbour, Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer manufacture; Pfizer runs one of the world's largest biotech sites at Grange Castle, on the edge of Dublin; Galway has 15,000 people working in medtech with Medtronic and Boston Scientific. Italy is among Ireland's main suppliers of medicines, and Italian companies in the supply chain ship packaging, line components, laboratory supplies and cleanroom furniture by pallet, with Medical Technology Ireland in Galway in September as the sector's trade fair.

Wine and food for Irish hospitality

Italian food exports to Ireland are worth around 300 million euro a year and growing; wine alone is over 60 million. The long-established importers are in and around Dublin: Little Italy on North King Street since 1976, Italicatessen in Wicklow, now part of the Musgrave group, plus the foodservice trade where the ICE keeps a showcase for Made in Italy. Wineries and producers ship pallets of wine, pasta, preserves and cheese all year round, with two peaks: the Borsa Vini Italiani in Dublin in January and CATEX, the hospitality show at the RDS, in February.

Machinery, switchgear and equipment for data centres

General-purpose machinery and electrical equipment are the biggest industrial items after pharma. Dublin is one of Europe's data centre capitals, and Riello UPS of Legnago has opened an Irish branch to serve them with uninterruptible power supplies, on show at DataCentres Ireland at the RDS in November. Packaging lines, components and control panels leave by pallet for Dublin, Limerick and Cork, and the National Manufacturing & Supply Chain Expo in May is the engineering sector's date.

Materials for a country that is building

Dublin is in the middle of a construction boom, with tens of thousands of new homes a year and large office developments. Italian tiles, bathroom furniture, kitchens and furniture arrive by pallet at showrooms and building sites in the capital, where the Hardware Show at the RDS brings together the country's builders' merchants.

Whiskey and dairy on the way back

In the opposite direction Ireland exports pharmaceuticals, processed meat and whiskey to Italy, with sales in Italy growing fast: the Royal Oak distillery in Carlow belongs to Illva of Saronno. Traffic that keeps the lines full on the return leg too.

FAQ: shipping pallets to Ireland

Does the pallet go through Great Britain?

No. The pallet crosses France and boards the direct ferry from Cherbourg to Rosslare or Dublin, staying inside the European Union the whole way. It never touches British territory, so there are no transit formalities and no extra documents.

What is the Eircode and where does it go in the address?

The Eircode is the Irish postcode: seven characters in two blocks, for example D02 X285, where the first three identify the routing area (D02 is Dublin 2). It goes on the last line, after the town or the Dublin postal district, leaving the rest of the address as it is: 24 Merrion Square, Dublin 2, D02 X285. Outside Dublin the county is usually added, such as Co. Cork. The house number comes before the street name.

Does Europacco deliver to Cork, Limerick and Galway or only to Dublin?

Anywhere in Ireland. Cork with the Ringaskiddy industrial zone, Limerick, Galway, Waterford and the other towns and cities are part of the delivery area just like Dublin. For deliveries to pharma plants or laboratories with access rules, it helps to give the department, a contact name and a phone number.

Can I send my move to Dublin on a pallet?

For people moving to Ireland, a pallet is a proven solution. Dublin's tech and pharma companies employ many Italians, and anyone setting up home there has their furniture and household goods follow on a pallet. The crossing from Cherbourg is included in the price.
