Food, building sites, Italian factories and heavy industry: Luxembourg is a small but varied market. The most common cases:

Cheese, pasta and wine for importers and restaurants

Food is the leading Italian export to Luxembourg, and cheese alone is worth tens of millions of euros a year. The specialist importers work from the industrial zones of the south: Aldo Bei & Fils in Schifflange with wines from every region, cured meats and cheese; Grosbusch in Ellange, a fruit and vegetable wholesaler with a growing Italian range. In the city, in Dudelange and in Differdange, Italian delicatessens number in the dozens and Italian restaurants keep opening. Italian wine holds more than a tenth of the local market, and Expogast, the gastronomy fair at Luxexpo, brings delegations of Italian producers to Luxembourg.

Tiles, kitchens and furnishings for the capital's building sites

Luxembourg builds fewer homes than it needs, and the property market drives large projects: the PwC campus at the Cloche d'Or, the new headquarters of the European Investment Bank on the Kirchberg, built by the Friulian group Rizzani de Eccher. Italian tiles, ceramics, stone, bathroom fittings, kitchens and furniture arrive by pallet at building sites and showrooms, and the Home Expo in October at Luxexpo is the country's home and living fair.

Granulates, moulds and spare parts for the Italian plants

Tontarelli, from Castelfidardo, makes plastic household goods in Bascharage with 250 staff and receives moulds, materials and equipment from Italy; Mondo, from Alba, produces rubber sports flooring in Foetz. These are recurring shipments of one or two pallets between parent company and plant, where pickup at the company's premises and delivery straight to the factory cut out the intermediate steps.

Components and spare parts for the Minette

In the south of the country ArcelorMittal produces beams in Differdange, sheet piles in Belval and rails in Rodange, with more than 2,000 staff; Goodyear has one of its largest European tyre plants in Colmar-Berg, and Guardian makes flat glass in Bascharage. Machinery and metal products are among Italy's leading industrial exports to Luxembourg: spare parts, tools and components for these plants travel by pallet from Italy's engineering districts. In the opposite direction, Luxembourg sheet piles, sections and railway material reach Italian construction sites.

Warehouses as a transit point for the Greater Region

Many Italian companies use Luxembourg as a depot to serve eastern France, Belgium and south-western Germany. The pallets arrive at the logistics providers of the Eurohub Sud in Bettembourg and the Eurohub Centre in Contern, where Kuehne+Nagel has 100,000 square metres of warehouse space, and from there go on to the end customers.
