Postal codes for India
The Indian postal codes were introduced on 15th August 1972 by India Post and called Postal Index Number, PIN briefly. The PIN is made up of six digits, the first describing the post code area, the second determines the sub-region and the third digit represents the sorting district eventually. The remaining numbers indicate the exact post office.
The nine postal zones are composed of eight regions and functional area:
1 - Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Chandigarh
2 - Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand
3 - Rajasthan, Gujarat, Daman and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli
4 - Goa, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh
5 - Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka
6 - Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Pondicherry, Lakshadweep
7 - Orissa, West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya, Andaman and Nicobar Islands
8 - Bihar, Jharkhand
9 - Military: Army Post Office (APO) and the post office Campo (FPO)
