The Postal Code System in Norway

Postal codes in Norway, called Postnummer in Norwegian, were introduced on March 18, 1968.

The postal code in Norway consists of four digits and is placed before the delivery location, for example, 0025 Oslo. It is mainly used for outgoing mail. For incoming mail, there are only special numbers for PO boxes.

The first two digits define the geographical location, i.e., the delivery region. The digits start at 00 in Oslo and increase with distance from the capital.

The highest postal numbers are in the Finnmark province near the Russian border. They start with 95 up to 99. The highest postal code is 9991 Båtsfjord, and the lowest postal code is 0001 Oslo.

The Norwegian Post

The postal service in Norway is operated by Posten Norge AS, one of the oldest state-owned companies, founded under Christian IV in 1647. In addition to mail delivery, the Norwegian Post also handles packaging, freight, and special transports for the oil industry. Posten Norge is one of the largest companies in the country with over 20,000 employees. It has 1,500 post offices spread across the country and generates an annual revenue of around 20 billion Norwegian kroner (as of 2005).

Posten Norge AS

Currently, the post is owned by the Norwegian Ministry of Transport and Communications and holds a monopoly on mail distribution. Posten Norge is managed by CEO Dag Mejdell and Chairman Arvid Moss. Since the Norwegian territory is vast and the post cannot handle all deliveries on its own, it grants licenses to private companies for mail distribution.
