Why does my parcel to Laos travel through Thailand?

Laos is one of the few countries in Asia without a single mile of coastline, so every international shipment enters the country in one of two ways: by air into Vientiane, or overland from a neighbouring country, almost always Thailand via the Friendship Bridge across the Mekong. In recent years the railway running down from China to Vientiane has entered the picture and is reshaping logistics across the whole region. It is still worth knowing, because it explains something that surprises many senders: in the tracking, your parcel may sit in Bangkok or at a Thai border crossing for a few days. Nothing is wrong. Which industries in Laos order from Italy?

Three worlds stand out. Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage city nestled between the Mekong and the mountains, runs on boutique hotels and polished restaurants, many with European owners or guests: that is where orders for espresso machines, professional kitchen equipment and furniture come from, and the same goes for Vientiane and the tourist spots of Vang Vieng and the Four Thousand Islands in the south. The second world is growing on the Bolaven Plateau around Paksong, where farmers cultivate arabica and robusta prized by Italian roasters: the coffee business needs processing equipment, roasting machines and packaging supplies. The third is energy. With its hydropower plants, Laos has cast itself as the battery of Southeast Asia, and the construction sites need a steady flow of technical components, measuring instruments and spare parts. How many days does delivery take, and when is the best time to ship?

A shipment usually takes 10 to 12 working days from pickup in Italy to delivery in Laos. Vientiane is the most common destination, followed by Luang Prabang, Pakse and Savannakhet. The basic unit is the ban, the village, and it exists even in the middle of the city: every neighbourhood of Vientiane is formally a ban, and leaving it out is the most common mistake. Then comes the muang, the district, and finally the province. Street names exist mainly in central Vientiane. Elsewhere people navigate by landmarks, a temple, a market, a school, and the postal code counts for little in everyday life. A complete address looks something like this: "Mario Rossi, House 123, Ban Phonexay, Muang Xaysettha, Vientiane Capital, Laos, tel. +856 ...". Write the label in Latin script, English is perfectly fine, nobody needs to know the Lao alphabet. And the phone number with the +856 prefix is no small detail: final delivery is arranged by phone call, as is the custom in the country, so a number that actually gets answered is worth as much as the rest of the address put together.

Paperwork and customs: what to prepare for Vientiane?

Customs clearance normally happens in Vientiane, at the airport or at the land border, and this is where a carefully prepared invoice pays off. Carefully prepared means: in English, with every item described in concrete terms, a realistic value and the HS codes. Generic wording like "samples" or "parts" is the leading cause of queries from customs. "Spare part for a coffee roasting plant", "fabric sample for furniture" or "printed catalogue of no commercial value" work far better. Businesses importing goods should hold their own local registration and check before the parcel arrives whether their category needs a permit, as is the case for food, cosmetics and technical equipment. A certificate of origin is added where required. With the paperwork in order, customs becomes just another leg of the journey, and the parcel moves on to the recipient's ban without losing time.
