Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai: Thailand explained from a delivery's point of view
Sukhumvit Soi 31, Soi 31/1, Soi 31/1 Yaek 4: how does a Thai courier read your address?
Thailand has an addressing system that is confusing at first glance. Main roads ("thanon") are flanked by dozens of numbered side lanes ("soi"), which can themselves branch out further ("yaek"). On Sukhumvit, the 30-kilometre artery of Bangkok, there are Soi numbered above 100, and each Soi can host an entire small neighbourhood. The standard parcel format is: recipient name, house number and main street with Soi, sub-district ("khwaeng" or "tambon"), district ("khet" or "amphoe"), province, 5-digit ZIP code. Example: "Somchai Tantiwong, 142/8 Sukhumvit Soi 31, Khlong Tan Nuea, Watthana, Bangkok 10110, THAILAND". The 5-digit ZIP code is the key for automatic routing, but it is the Soi that lets the rider actually find the door. Always add the recipient's phone number with the +66 prefix, because in Thailand the courier calls or sends a LINE message before going up to the higher floors of condominiums.
Can the Thai script be avoided? Krung Thep or Bangkok?
Yes, the address can be written entirely in Latin characters, and that is in fact the norm for international shipments. Thai script (ก ข ค) is beautiful but not required, and the Thai postal system accepts standard transliteration without issues. Bangkok itself is an interesting case: the official name is Krung Thep Maha Nakhon, and in 2022 the government updated the internationally preferred spelling, but "Bangkok" remains perfectly valid on labels and in most tracking systems. For other cities, the common Latin spelling applies: Chiang Mai, Phuket, Pattaya, Khon Kaen, Hat Yai. What really matters for routing is the ZIP code. Bangkok ZIPs start with 10, Chiang Mai with 50, Phuket with 83, Pattaya with 20.
Who ships from Italy to Thailand? Three very different routes
The first route is that of Italian retirees who have moved to Thailand, mostly to Hua Hin, Chiang Mai and the southern islands. They number in the thousands, and every year they have documents, custom-made glasses, shoes in their own size (above European size 43 is hard to find in Thailand) and over-the-counter pharmaceuticals shipped from Italy. The second route is industrial: Bangkok has a huge Italian food scene, with hundreds of restaurants and gelaterias, and Sicilian, Apulian and Venetian suppliers regularly ship pizza machines, gelato equipment, displays, moulds and consumables. The Como silk district has long-standing relationships with Thai weavers in the Surin and Khon Kaen provinces, and the Veneto leather industry works with tanneries and workshops around Bangkok. The third route is family-related and cultural: Thai residents in Italy (the community has grown above all in Rome, Milan and Florence) sending parcels to relatives, and Italians with Thai partners who maintain a dual residence.
Songkran, monsoon and Thai customs: the three factors that shift timing
Songkran is the Thai New Year and falls on April 13, 14 and 15. In practice the country slows down from a week before to a week after, because it is the most important holiday of the year and Thais return to their home villages. For shipments that need to arrive before mid-April, it is worth shipping at least two weeks in advance. The southwest monsoon, from May to October, does not block deliveries but can slow tourist islands (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Phi Phi) by one or two days when ferries reduce their schedules. On the customs side, Thailand is not part of any customs union with the EU: every shipment goes through full controls, with potential duties and import VAT charged to the recipient. For private gifts of modest value, transit is usually fast. For commercial goods, an invoice in English with HS codes, a precise description and a realistic value is needed. A cultural note: avoid printing images of the Buddha or the royal family on the packaging, because Thailand is very sensitive on these topics and an inappropriate label can cause a hold.
From Milan to Bangkok in 7 to 9 working days: what happens in between?
With Europacco, shipping from Italy to Thailand takes 7 to 9 working days to the main destinations. Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Pattaya are the fastest and most predictable hubs. The Gulf of Thailand islands (Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Koh Phangan) and rural destinations in the northeast ("Isan") add on average one or two days, because the parcel is sorted at the regional hub and then loaded onto a boat or local transport. The times indicated do not include customs holds. After the order on europacco.com, tracking covers the whole journey and is particularly useful in Thailand because the local rider often updates the status in real time through the destination courier's app. For the islands, it is good practice to leave the recipient a few days of tolerance, especially during the high tourist season between December and February, when the volume of parcels arriving in Phuket and Samui is very high.

Customs information for Thailand
Shipments to Thailand require customs clearance and are subject to import duties and taxes. europacco.com prepares the export documents, while the recipient must cooperate with the local customs office for the import process.
Required documents: commercial or proforma invoice, declaration of free export, and a copy of the sender’s ID. Accurate documentation speeds up clearance and helps prevent the shipment from being held.
Duties in Thailand depend on the declared value and the type of goods. To learn more about how to correctly complete customs documents and specific national rules, see our customs information guide.
