Ship a Pallet to Finland

Companies shipping pallets from Italy to Finland often supply the industries that built the country: the paper mills of Stora Enso and UPM, the shipyards of Turku and Rauma, engine and crane makers such as Wärtsilä and Konecranes. Machinery has been the largest item in Italian exports to Finland for years. Italian industry is present on the ground too: Prysmian makes submarine cables in Pikkala, near Helsinki, and PMT of Pinerolo builds winders for paper machines in Valkeakoski. Spare parts, machine assemblies and components travel to these plants, shipments of one or two pallets for which a full truckload makes no sense. That is exactly what the Europacco pallet service is for: it takes pallets of up to 600 kg from any address in Italy to Helsinki, Tampere or Oulu, ferry included, for private customers too.

From €213,03 for a standard Euro pallet (80×120 cm).

Ship a Pallet to Finland

More than 2,000 kilometres and a sea crossing, but the price is still the one in the form

Finland is the most distant destination of the pallet service, and to get there the pallet boards a ferry. The price, however, works as it does for nearby destinations: the order form works it out from weight, dimensions and the two addresses, with the crossing already included. For a standard Euro pallet (80×120 cm) it starts at €213,03, pickup in Italy and delivery in Finland included. Helsinki, Tampere or a factory in Oulu cost the same.

Maximum dimensions: 150 × 150 × 200 cm (sum of the three sides max. 400 cm)

Maximum weight: 600 kg

By road to the Baltic, then by ferry to Helsinki

The pallet crosses Germany by road to Travemünde or Rostock on the Baltic Sea. There it boards the ships of Finnlines, part of the Naples-based Grimaldi group, which sails daily from Travemünde to Helsinki, a crossing of around thirty hours, and several times a week from Rostock to Hanko, the southernmost port in the country. Alternatively the route runs through Denmark and Sweden, with the ferry from Stockholm to Turku or Naantali, the gateways to western Finland.

Once unloaded at Vuosaari, Helsinki's cargo port, the pallet enters the Finnish distribution network: the main warehouses are in Vantaa and Kerava, north of the capital, and from there the lines leave for Tampere, with its logistics hub at Pirkkala airport, for Turku, for Lahti and for Oulu in the north. The port of HaminaKotka, in the east, mainly serves the wood and paper industry. Including the crossing, it takes 7-10 working days from pickup.

The ferry and the Baltic change nothing about the paperwork, the pallet stays within the EU single market. The DDT from your order is enough all the way to Helsinki.

What Italian companies ship to Finland

Traffic to Finland is made up of heavy industry, shipyards, design and a food market with a taste for Made in Italy. The most common cases:

Machinery and spare parts for the paper mills

Forest is Finland's raw material and paper its historic product: Stora Enso and UPM are among the largest paper producers in the world, Valmet builds the complete lines. Italian makers of paper and tissue machinery supply this sector with spare part assemblies, rolls and components, and PMT of Pinerolo runs its own winder factory in Valkeakoski, between Tampere and Helsinki. Paper, board and pulp travel the other way to Italy.

Furnishings and supplies for the shipyards of Turku and Rauma

Meyer Turku builds the largest cruise ships in the world, among them the Costa Toscana delivered to the Italian operator, and Rauma Marine Constructions produces ferries and naval vessels. Fitting out a cruise ship calls for furniture, cladding, lighting and components for cabins and public areas. Italian companies specialise in exactly these supplies, and they travel by pallet straight to the yard.

Prysmian in Pikkala and the energy industry

The Prysmian plant in Pikkala, west of Helsinki, is one of the group's four European centres for submarine cables and is expanding both production and warehousing. Around it sits a cluster of energy and engineering: Wärtsilä in Vaasa, Konecranes and KONE in Hyvinkää. Components, spare parts and consumables from Italy reach these plants on pallets.

Wine and food between Alko and the restaurant trade

In Finland wine is sold through the state monopoly Alko, where Prosecco is by now a fixture, and the restaurants of Helsinki and Tampere are looking for Italian products. Wineries, pasta makers and coffee roasters ship pallets to importers and distributors in the Helsinki area, with Gastro Helsinki and TastePro at the Messukeskus as the sector's showcase.

Italian design at Habitare

Every September the Messukeskus in Helsinki hosts Habitare, the design and interiors fair with more than 40,000 visitors, which also has a Milan edition. Italian furniture, lighting and sample collections arrive by pallet at the exhibition centre and, through the year, at the design retailers of the capital and of Turku.

Components for the subcontracting fair in Tampere Alihankinta, held in Tampere in the autumn, is the largest Nordic fair for industrial subcontracting: metal, electronics, plastics and rubber. It is where Italian subcontractors meet Finnish workshops, and components, samples and stand material arrive by pallet directly at the exhibition centre.

Frequently asked questions: pallets to Finland

Does the pallet travel by ferry? Do I need to arrange anything?

Yes, the stretch between Germany and Finland is by sea, on the freight ferries that link Travemünde and Rostock with Helsinki and Hanko. For the sender nothing changes: the crossing is included in the price calculated in the order form, the pallet stays on the trailer and no extra document is needed.

What do the letter and number after the house number mean in Finnish addresses?

The postcode has five digits and comes before the town, which is often written in capitals: 00550 HELSINKI. The house number follows the street name, and in apartment buildings the staircase letter and flat number are added on the same line, for example Mäkelänkatu 25 B 13. For pallets the street and number are what matter most, but the staircase letter helps the driver notify the right person.

Does Europacco deliver to Oulu and northern Finland too?

Yes. Oulu, with its technology hub and its paper mill, and the other towns of the north are just as much part of the service area as Helsinki. Deliveries to the north sit towards the upper end of the 7-10 working days, because after unloading in Helsinki the pallet still has several hundred kilometres to go.

I'm moving to Finland to study or do research. Can I send my things on a pallet?

That is no problem, even without a company. Helsinki and Espoo attract researchers, students and professionals from Italy, for example to Aalto University. A pallet carries books, furniture and household goods, with the ferry included in the price.
