How long does a parcel take to reach Skopje, and which route does it travel?

Typical transit time is 6 to 9 working days, from pickup in Italy to delivery. The journey is by road along the Balkan route: the parcel crosses Slovenia and continues south, and Skopje sits right on the motorway axis linking Belgrade to Thessaloniki, a position that has always made the city a crossroads for goods. The valley of the Vardar, the river that cuts through the country from north to south, is also its main logistics corridor. If your recipient is in Skopje or along this axis, expect the lower end of the range; for Ohrid, Bitola or the mountain villages, allow a few extra days.

Should the label be written in Cyrillic or Latin letters?

Macedonian is written in Cyrillic, but you don't need it for shipping: a label in Latin letters works perfectly well, couriers and customs handle them every day. You need the street and house number, the four-digit postcode and the city, 1000 for Skopje. An example: "Mario Rossi, ul. Partizanska 25, ap. 7, 1000 Skopje, North Macedonia, tel. +389 ...". In the western areas around Tetovo and Gostivar, place names also exist in Albanian, and it's fine to use whichever version the recipient gives you. The phone number always closes the address: for apartment blocks without clear doorbells and for villages, it's the most direct way to complete the delivery.

Orthodox holidays and Muslim holidays: when does the country pause?

North Macedonia lives with two religious calendars side by side. Orthodox families celebrate Christmas on 7 January and Easter often on a different date from the Western one, while the Albanian and Muslim community celebrates the two Bajram festivals, which follow the lunar calendar and shift every year. All of these dates are public holidays for the whole country, and deliveries slow down around them. Then on 2 August comes Ilinden, the national day, in the middle of the summer holiday season, when many emigrants return home and parcel traffic grows. If you're shipping against a deadline close to these dates, build in a margin of a few days.

How does Macedonian customs clearance work?

Every parcel goes through Macedonian customs, and the difference between a fast clearance and a slow one comes down to the paperwork. For personal parcels, an honest description of the contents and a realistic value are enough. Commercial shipments need an invoice with every item concretely described, HS codes and a consignee with its own import registration. English is fine for all documents. For food, cosmetics and other regulated categories, the recipient should check the import conditions in advance. A description like "wine transfer pump" opens doors faster than a generic "equipment".
